How This Should Work

The above 4 steps represent a sequential, linear flow from idea to execution. But, it doesn’t work quite like that. Taking a riff from Lean, the process when done efficiently and collaboratively is usually more cyclical than linear:

 

The point of the above diagram is that  you can and should do A LOT in defining,  concepting and testing an idea or product before it ever gets to development.  Bottom line: by following this process and testing and validating your product up-front, you’ll save a lot of time and even more money, and you’ll have a much more successful product at the end as well.
